Like many people in their late teens and early 20’s, Justin Schwanke is also a university student. While the world of academia is full of possibilities, you wouldn’t typically associate it with the realm of BMX, but he did just that. Justin took his love of riding and received an athletics scholarship, to help offset the cost of his education. I asked him to share some more information about it, so take some time to read his story below. If you’re a post-secondary student also take a detailed read through your school’s administrative literature, because you might be able to find a similar opportunity for yourself.

I was emailing with Justin Schwanke recently about some ideas, and he briefly mentioned suffering a collapsed lung. I certainly hadn’t expected to hear that, and asked him to elaborate on this experience. Everyone gets injured at some point, and sometimes it isn’t the result of anything to do with your bike, but the frustration of not being able to ride (or do much of anything) is all the same. He eloquently typed up the details of his spontaneous collapsed lung, how he coped with it, and some realizations he made about his BMX pursuits, so we thought we’d share it with you. You can read the full thing after the link, and look for some more stuff with Justin Schwanke on here in the near future. Take care of your body folks.

Justin Schwanke and Thomas Henderson took a 2 week trip to Barcelona/Southern Spain and this is the result. This edit is dope for a few reasons: you actually feel like you’re in Spain for 12 minutes, Justin Schwanke always has his own unique style/Thomas also shreds, two Canadians took the initiative to make an amazing trip from rural Alberta to Spain and on their own dime, they rode alot of different original spots and not foot high ledges, and overall it just has an awesome vibe to it. Note British Airways also lost Thomas’ bike for the first 4 days of the trip. Think twice before you book BA!!!

“A coaster, a cassette, a race bike and an airplane. There’s a bit of everything in this…”
Justin Schwanke sent in this diverse video. What sold it for me was the tune and the bold choice to include race footage. Click below for a couple other submissions from Winnipeg’s Wayne Hartman & Matt Perrin and also Vancouver Island’s Nathan Hines.
