Ryan Antle sent over the latest section from his Newfoundland video, Stranded, that he’s been uploading, and it’s of his 16 year old brother Corey. Usually when people use the age of the rider as a descriptor for a video I have a bit of apprehension about it, but I was really impressed with this. His manual pad game is on point, and there’s lots of technical ledge lines. This is Corey’s first full video part he’s filmed, and it’s definitely a sign of good things.
Here is Jordan Hickey’s section from The Stranded Video that came out late last year from Newfoundland and premiered at Turndown. This section is pretty amazing and filled with some amazing looking setups (like the rail at 4:00). The entire last minute was filled with some awesome clips that I wasn’t expecting. The two tracks threw me off at first (surprisingly I don’t hear too many parts edited to Drake, yet that guy is everywhere), but the riding holds up throughout. This video, and the rest of the Stranded video, really does a good job at showcasing the newest generation of riders in Newfoundland, and they will be slowly putting all the sections online over the next little while.
We posted about the St. John’s, Newfoundland scene video Stranded when Ryan Antle sent us the trailer earlier this year and he just let us know that they are finished and premiering it at Turndown this Friday, November 22nd at 6:00pm. $20 to watch the video, get a copy, and ride the Turndown park until 10:00pm. Ryan Antle sent over this trailer for the upcoming St. John’s scene video The Stranded Video, and I’m a sucker for a strong local scene production. This is the first full length video from their area since Hiatus in 2005, and it’s great to see such a range of ages and talent in this trailer alone. The video will be premiering at Turndown this fall and then online shortly after. We’ll post more details about the premiere party when we have them.
St. John’s, Newfoundland has a booming BMX scene and population, despite the city’s relatively small size. Much of that can be attributed to Rob Yetman’s shop Turndown. Very few shops offer a huge selection of BMX bikes and parts, as well as being home to an ever changing indoor park. Rob and his crew are in there building ramps, rails, and modifying their setup in order to offer the riders of St. John’s a haven for the long winter months. Jon Fenn sent in this edit from their winter so far, which includes a number of Hiatus/Deadline era riders back riding for the first time in a few years.
To an outsider, the Maritimes have always had an awesome scene. Back in the day, one of the highlights of that scene was a series of videos created by Chris Nicholas. Chris was an awesome rider – he bombed huge rails, rode impossible pools, and in Deadline (2003?) he did a 5050 to second stage over crooked – maybe the first one. Chris was also one of the first videographers I knew of who used a DVX100 for bmx, and he was always doing interesting things with still cameras. Production wise, Hiatus was far ahead of its time. The motion graphics were dialed, the filming was on point, and the whole thing had a polished look that was unique and just really cool. All this was happening in 2005, in Newfoundland, for a local scene video.
The St. John’s BMX series introduced many of us to two big names in Canadian BMX – Jeff Evans and Phil Bartlett. In Deadline, Phil looked like he was ten years old. Two years later, in Hiatus, Phil had grown two feet taller and it was unclear that he was even the same guy. Jeff was also pretty young in these videos; he brought East Coast street style reminiscent of riders far to the south of him and totally owned the opposite grind variations of the time.

This Ant Life edit came in from Jon Fennelly from St. John’s and it’s a great weekend watch. Featuring all the bys from Newfoundland (Jon Fennelly, Rob Yetman, Patrick Sullivan, Sean Slade, Phil Bartlett, Justin Sullivan, Luke Reid, Blair Pennell, Robert Osmond, and Brandon Hedderson) having some fun.
