Carts of Darkness by Murray Siple, National Film Board of Canada
For those who haven’t seen it, Carts of Darkness is a documentary about a group of homeless guys in North Van who bomb hills on shopping carts. It’s a great combination of entertaining gnarly stuff and serious subject matter. And it has a badass soundtrack. I was thinking about this film today for some reason, and though it was worth a post.
Carts of Darkness also has a loose BMX connection through one of the guys behind the lens. Mike McKinlay worked as a videographer on the film – If that name sounds familiar, he produced a series of short pieces with Travis Collier that were pretty memorable. Mike’s brother Sam also had a rad photo in Chase from the old Winfield park, which (legend has it) the two designed to look like a something that would either shock or amuse incoming air traffic. Check some of Mike’s work out here.
I know the indoor edits have been plenty on here lately, especially from Joyride 150, but it’s been a harsh winter and you’ve got to survive any way you can. On top of that, this new edit of Brandon Webster hits in all the right places with a fury of technical tricks. So many good lines in this video, and I hear rumour of a 3 way split Joyride edit involving Webster and other young talent coming soon.
Here’s an older pic of Jaumell that never saw the light of day. Taken at dusk during a filming mission to a certain mall in Edmonton. Check Jaumell’s Macneil edit after the jump for the banger clip!
It’s that time of year, get out to Victoria, BC next weekend (April 6th) for the annual Gorilla jam. Guaranteed good time right there, read on for pics of the backyard ramp you could be riding at the jam, thanks to Josh Bissat for hooking this up.
“This is the back of The Champ’s car as we drove through Cleveland Ohio. The second photo is a spot in Akron that you might recognize from ALYK videos and in Cult’s TIC. Shot on some expired slide film that Mikaël Cardin sent through.”

I was searching for an old post on the site recently and stumbled upon this video again after not having seen it since Mike Cardin fist made it. I’ve always loved the mood of this video, and the fact that he shot the whole thing off the cuff from his phone. The caption “it has a credit section feel to it more than anything” sums it up perfectly. With the entire country currently under various states of spring thaw (or some places still buried under deep snow and ice), this might be the pick-me-up you need right now to remind you how great summer is, wherever you are located.
We spent the afternoon at Joyride 150 the other day and Chris Silva banged out this quick 5 clip edit in their street plaza. Guest clips from Leland Nightingale and myself (Prashant Gopal).
