THE NORTHERN EMBASSY

Cory Wiergowski CDP

Chase Davidson had a busy 2013. Upon graduating, he drove/moved from Southern Ontario to just outside Vancouver BC, which apparently still wasn’t a big enough year for Chase as he then made the decision to move to Japan and work at the British Hills ski resort. Up until 2013 I knew Chase could kill it on a bike, what I didn’t know was how much he could kill it behind a lens. Chase has taken countless amazing pictures in the past couple years and he has graciously chosen some of his favorites to be featured on our site. Along with a short write up as to why each photo means so much to Chase, read on to see some amazing photos which will surely brighten your day.

“This is the first photo I ever had published in a magazine (DIG BMX Magazine March/April ’12 issue 87) and also the first time I’ve travelled by plane to stay with Detroit homies Cory Wiergowski and Nick Bullen at the scum house in Peoria, Arizona for three weeks. This photo is of Cory’s bike chillen in one of the many ditches we rode throughout my stay.”

Winter is long and shitty and Canada needs more events like this to get us through! The boys at BMX Gallery 4130 are putting on an amazing Albertan weekend of riding March 1st and 2nd. Day one featuring Three Hills Genesis Park and day two featuring Sylvan Lake Incline Industries Park. If you’re anywhere near Calgary, or just rad enough to make a trip out to this, you know it will be an awesome time. Keep posted on updates/news on the event via the BMX Gallery site.

Ten years ago today, the Okanagan scene lost one of its prominent figures. Chris Cayford was the BMX guy at the local bike shop and was well known for putting on the Winfield bowl jams. He rode everything, including flatland, and brought the Whitehorse tradition of shoveling skateparks in the winter time with him to Kelowna.

For years, the BK crew (Mat Ridgeway, Matt Desson etc.) continued putting on the Winfield bowl jams in Chris’ memory. The jam was always held in March and was usually the first jam of the year in BC. The jams had some memorable moments, including Brett Craig (RIP) driving from Saskatchewan to ride the jam only to have to turn around right afterwards and drive 20+ hours home, and Dom Mach doing this crazy over double peg out of the bowl. The jam hasn’t happened for a few years, but there are talks of a ten year jam happening this year.

For all of us who knew Chris, he’s remembered fondly.

Kyle “Cheech” Hirschkorn knocks a few wobbly pops back with Mat Ridgeway, Rasmus Gravesen and Slade Scherer. The guys link up a few lines around Confederation Park and make the best of a sunny afternoon. Kyle is recovering from a recent surgery, with good vibes like these, I’m sure he will be back behind bars soon enough. What better way to keep up with the buds than, dusting off the camera and grabbing a few clips.

enns

Volume Bikes just posted an awesome new gallery of photos of Jason Enns putting a hurt on a secret barrier spot that he took members of their team too. To make it even better, the photos were apparently shot in a matter of 30 minutes, and a warm-up to his next ‘secret’ spot. If you follow Jason on Instagram you would be familiar with his seemingly daily escapades of spot searching that leave anyone in Canada (or anywhere) suffering the cold climates seething in jealousy. I had a hard time picking my favourite out of the series but settled on this classic Enns-esque invert, but do yourself a favour and check out the rest here.

Amos has been killing it for the last while but has been off the radar for the most part. The guy has endless amounts of energy and channels it through his bike. MacNeil took notice and snapped the dude up. This edit was filmed over the spring, summer, and fall with no real project or deadline in mind. Just buds out cruisin!

This year’s 2014 Toronto BMX Jam is coming up quick. Always on the first weekend of March, and part of the Toronto International Bike Show. There appears to still be spaces left to compete. Check out the compilation video of some of the past years events, and you can get more info below and by visiting their website at torontobmx.ca.

“It’s that time of the year again, the largest BMX contest in Canada is one month away. This year we will be having Ladies, Amateur, Expert, and Professional BMX classes. Since the Toronto Jam is at the Toronto International Bicycle Trade Show which is geared to all styles of riding, for the first time we will be hosting a Professional Freestyle Mountain Bike Invitational on our course. The judges will be the highly credited Mark Losey, Leigh Ramsdell and Mark Filipowicz. The format will be the traditional 4 riders on the course jam format, this does not mean 4 riders riding all at the same time, etiquette will be important.

To also make sure our riders are taken care of we will also have complimentary chiropractic care and massage therapy. Joyride 150 will be having a session Saturday evening with a complimentary shuttle service from downtown and back.

There will be a $10,000 prize purse as well as some amazing prizes from; Ten Pack, Krusher, Woodward, Nike, Markit Denim, Joyride150, McDonalds, Outdoor Gear Canada, Acklands Grainger, Inflow Bike Park and more to come.

Register NOW at torontobmx.ca This year we have a pre pay option, you can also pay at the Jam upon arrival.”
