In a follow up to our post from last Thursday with Dave Osato’s 1995 Props interview, Matt Sinclair reminded us of this Osato part in BMX-MEN that came out the following year (and Least Most uploaded 4 years ago). This part is filled with so many amazing tricks: 540 tailtap decade at 2:06, icepick to decade at 2:40, over tooth x-up 360 half barspin (?) at 2:50, and pretty much the last half minute are all some of the most technically advanced tricks of the time, and some would argue are still to this day. Please give this one a watch, and maybe go ride a mini ramp afterwards.

Spotted this classic interview from 1995 with an 18 year old Dave Osato show up on the Props Youtube page and knew it was an immediate post. Dave talks about being a rookie pro, the difficulty with traveling to contests as a Canadian, and decisions with making a jump from small to big sponsors, all while demonstrating some of the most technical mini ramp riding that BMX has ever seen (that Canadian nose pick to barspin at 3:21!). Check out this interview from nearly 20 years ago with one the Canadian greats whose impact and influence is still felt to this day in BMX.

To further get the word out about his big flatland contest, Real City Spin, taking place this weekend on August 30-31 in Montreal, Jean-William Prevost got on Global News to explain to the general public what flatland is all about and this weekend’s big event. Professional level contests taking place in Canada are few and far between, and even fewer are flatland contests, so if you ride flatland and you live in Eastern Canada you don’t want to miss this event. You can find all the info you need on their site here or on our post last week here.

This video from Mitch Anderson is pretty great. To make a long story short, Mitch has been battling a pretty harsh disease for the last four years, and after beginning to feel stronger and healthier he packed up his stuff, loaded up his ride, and took off for the west coast. You can read a lot more about his battle and personal outlook over on his website, read his own statement below, and clear 12 minutes to watch a compilation of his six week road trip across Western Canada.

After 4 years bed ridden with constant medical care I started working towards becoming physically active again. After 2 years of hard work my health started to regain. I sold everything I could, jumped in my favorite car (a beautiful 1986 Porsche 911, modified by Rii Projects) grabbed my bmx and took off west! With no plan but to ride my bike, meet old and new friends, and experience as much as possible. It was a great success and I hope to find funding to head out east before the winter!

You would not usually think an edit of two guys riding one quarter pipe would be all that interesting, but this is certainly an exception. If you take huge objection to the manual to nowhere 180 then maybe this isn’t for you, but the last few tricks (whip to lawnmower?!) in this short video with Chris Silva and Steve Moxley are pretty incredible and I think worthy of posting. Check out the two riding a big red quarter pipe out behind the 3Ride Toronto shop.

Check out this promo video for the Real City Spin flatland contest taking place in Montreal at Le Taz on August 30th and 31st. Montreal’s flatland scene has produced some amazing riders that hold their own in the international contest scene in the last number of years, and it’s great to see Jean-William Prevost (Dub) throwing an event like this in his home city and putting a big push on up and coming riders.

This contest will also be the third stop in the Am Flatland Circuit, with categories in novice, veteran, expert, and pro, and they have confirmed riders from Costa Rica, Japan, USA, and France. If flatland is your thing, no matter your skill level, you should be at this event. I think this line from their website summarizes it nicely:

“We are offering a competition to the North Eastern American Flatland scene to stimulate the up and coming riders in setting and achieving their goals by showcasing their tricks at an official Freestyle event.”

Unbeknownst to a lot of people that aren’t from Toronto, there is a small island south of the city appropriately titled Toronto Island. It is the exact opposite of the rest of the city, in that it is quiet, peaceful, full of green space, has (relatively) clean beaches, and not populated with cars. It also has a very small and modest skatepark.

We decided to take a trip over for the afternoon to see what fun we could have with it, soak up some sun, and have a BBQ. Before we got much riding in we found ourselves dodging the rain, hiding under gazebos, and sharing food with other visitors, before we ultimately got to the beach for some sunny skies during a break in the weather.

Check out this short video of our Toronto Island afternoon with riding from Chijioke Okafo, Chris Cadot, Trent Barker, and Scott Barker. Filmed and edited by Chris Cadot.

Our pal Justin Schwanke hit us up with this video from a trip he took to the state of Washington recently with his friend Colin Reimer. They flew from central Canada to Seattle, and spent some time down in Olympia. Check out his video above, and a collection of photos from his trip after the link.
