Camera Diaries: Jeremy Deme – Part 2

We return with a second Camera Diary saga from Jeremy Deme. This one features less violence, and more entomology. Click below to read his tale.

This one happened a little over a month ago. (Matt) Desson, Dillon (Lloyd) and myself decided to venture to a spot that involves some searching/fence climbing to get to. It was close to the forest and a large lake so there were tons of bugs in the air. We filmed there for a little over an hour and started to pack up. At some point a bug flew into my eye, and usually your eye will flush out the bug, or you can scoop it out. My eye was itchy for a while but eventually it stopped feeling weird and I stopped thinking about it.

The following day I woke up with a surprise, my right eye would not open. I flushed water in it, tried forcing it open, nothing would work. I went to the clinic, the doctor gave me some drops, but couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my eye. He then informed me that every eye specialist in BC was in a conference (it was a Friday) and that I would have to wait to see someone on Monday. Three days went by very slowly, but lots of eye drops, coupla drinks and an eye patch got me through it, and I met the specialist the following Monday.

To make a long story short, I saw the specialist three time that week, and a bug was found at the back of my eye. It was nearly impossible to spot and it had somehow decomposed itself into my eyeball, which would require minor surgery to remove. The specialist would cut the bug from my eye ball with a knife. The specialist told me to buy a lottery ticket that day because in his 30 years of practice he has never seen that happen. Trust me when I say that I will never take a fully functional eye ball for granted again.

Shit can happen, even when you’re behind a camera.
